The impact of fire damage. Why proper cleaning is important. Antioch, CA Easty Bay area

Fire, is an awful beast, consuming everything in its wake and covering what it didn't destroy in thick black smoke.  If you experience a Fire, it's important to remember that Life is the most important thing, the items that we lose can be replaced.

A Fire can become out of control in as little as 60 seconds.  If you smell smoke, get out of the house and call 911 for help.  Don't try and put it out yourself or you could get really hurt. The gases that come from the combustion and the heat that can be generated are often times enough to kill you before the flames ever can. Use extreme caution when exiting your home.

When there's a fire, the smoke that remains is a mixture of everything that combusted in the house which could be papers, plastics, chemicals, etc.  This thick black smoke locks itself to every surface. When walls get affected, they most often need to be painted. But paint won't stick to smoke so then the smoke has to be removed.  The removal process for smoke is specialized and extremely labor intensive. If the wrong product is used then the paint won't stick to the surface, yet again. It’s extremely important to not try to clean any surface yourself, you could cause permanent or secondary damage.

This is a photo of the before and after in a fire that ravaged a house leaving black smoke everywhere.  It's amazing how much of the smoke can be removed when done correctly. It still needs to be painted, but the paint WILL stick to these walls.

Having the right restoration company in to do the work makes all the difference.

summer grill fires can turn into a disaster. Antioch Ca East bay area

Grill Fires Can Turn Dinner into Disaster

Local SERVPRO fire and water clean-up professional offers safety tips to help outdoor chefs prevent fires and burn injuries

As the summer season approaches, local fire and disaster remediation specialist Michael Borders of SERVPRO of Antioch knows that the number of grill fires will increase, peaking in July. "Charcoal and gas grills, barbeques and the like are involved in an average of more than 5,000 structure fires each year and almost 5,000 additional outdoor fires," said Borders. Beyond that, Borders adds, grilling accidents result in 19,700 trips to the hospital annually. Thermal burns account for 9,500 of those visits, and children under the age of five account for an average of 2,000, or 39 percent, of those burns.1

SERVPRO of Antioch knows that families can take steps to protect their home from damage and their family from injuries and still enjoy home-grilled, summer meals.

Before you grill:

  • READY: Clean grill racks and grease trays. For gas grills, check the gas tank hose for leaks at the beginning of the season.
  • SET: Choose a safe, firm, level spot for the grill away from coolers, running children and pets, and mingling guests. Grill outside, never in a garage or under the awning on a deck, the eaves of your home, or low-hanging branches.
  • GO: Prepare the grill for cooking carefully. For charcoal grills, use a charcoal chimney with newspaper, a charcoal starter fluid, or an electric charcoal starter plugged into an outdoor-rated extension cord. For gas grills, open the lid before turning the grill on. If you smell gas after the grill is lit, do not try to move the grill. Get away from the grill and call the fire department.

While you grill

  • SAFE ZONE: Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the hot grill, both while you are cooking and after you serve the food. Grill surfaces can remain hot for an hour or more.
  • SAFE TOOLS: Use long-handled grill utensils in good condition; avoid loose, flowing clothing; and wear flame-retardant mitts to adjust vents to help prevent burns.
  • SAFE COOKING: Keep the fire under control. Manage flareups by adjusting grill height, using grill controls, or spreading out the coal bed. Keep baking soda within reach to control grease fires. Watch for blowing embers and have a fire extinguisher, a garden hose, or a bucket of sand handy to extinguish spark-triggered fires. Never attempt to move a hot grill.

"Home fires can be devastating, both financially and emotionally, because smoke and water damage often amplify the destruction to both the structure and its contents," says Borders. "While our SERVPRO-trained professionals are here to help you recover "Like it never even happened," if you do experience a structure fire, we believe that prevention is better than a cure. Fires and burn injuries caused by grills are not strictly a summer phenomenon. Nearly half of home grillers use their grill year-round, so it's important to keep these safety guidelines in mind all year long."

Mushrooms from mold damage Hidden mold in a wall shows itself in the form of mushrooms

Mold is one of those things, its all around us looking for a nice place to settle down and grow.  Our houses are warm and made from wood and paper, all the things that mold spores are seeking.  Introduce some water and we have the third element which now leads to growth.

Kitchens are notorious for leaks and things that happen involving water.  The cabinets keep these things hidden.  When was the last time you moved all those bags and cleaners and other stuff that lies under your Kitchen sink to look for leaks and / or mold growth?  We do not, and by the time we find it, it can be too late.

This is a case of a leak in the wall coming from the upstairs behind the dishwasher.  Never was this noticed until water became visible in the form of mushrooms, which by then, was too late. Hidden inside the walls the homeowner had no idea the damage that was going on.

When you have worries or concerns, call SERVPRO of Antioch.  We will come and inspect for water damage or visible mold concerns; we will come inspect during normal business hours.  925-706-0106

Top 5 reason you might have a commercial water loss.

6/28/2021 (Permalink)

commercial drying process Commercial drying equipment placed in a wild life museum

Extreme weather. As many may know flooding can happen very quickly. What starts out as a small storm can suddenly turn into something larger and cause a lot more damage than anyone expected. If your commercial property is not in pristine condition, there is a chance that water damage will occur. For example, a small leak on the roof can turn into a large downpour of water that floods an entire section of the property. Also, if you have Windows or doors that are easily compromised, water can wipe out your entire office.

Damaged appliances. Pretty much every office building has a kitchen or break room. And typically, these rooms have a refrigerator, a sink disposer or possibly a dishwasher. When these appliances fail, they can leak a significant amount of water, flooding the entire room or more.

Backed up sewer lines. Bathrooms are another source of possible problems. It is not uncommon for the sewer lines to get backed up, releasing contaminated water into the building. This type of water damage is extremely dangerous because the water is filled with hazardous waste and other contaminants. Bathroom toilet supply lines are also notorious culprits of water damage.

Malfunctioning sprinklers. By law, all commercial properties must be equipped with an overhead sprinkler system. This system works in conjunction with the fire alarm and is typically activated when the fire alarm goes off. This can cause water damage in two ways. First, any time there is a fire and the sprinklers activate, there will be water damage. And second, the sprinkler system can malfunction and activate on its own. When this happens, significant water damage can occur because the sprinkler system covers the entire building.

Broken pipes. Broken or cracked pipes are very common in commercial buildings, especially as they age. When these pipes burst open, water rushes out of them, spraying throughout the building. This can cause damage to the ceiling, walls, and flooring, not to mention any furniture or electronics that get in the water’s way.

Obviously, you want to keep an eye on the list above. Ongoing maintenance to your commercial property is key to not having water related issues. But if water damage does happen anywhere on your property, you need to take immediate action. After calling your insurance provider, you need to contact a reliable water damage restoration company, like SERVPRO of Antioch. And once we are on the job, we get right to work by doing the following:

First, we will thoroughly inspect the property. We will find out what caused the damage and make sure that the water has stopped flowing. We will also determine if the water is contaminated or not. During this stage we remove all furniture that has been affected, while trying to salvage as much as possible.

Next, we begin the water extraction process.

Once all the water is removed, we start the drying process. If everything is not dried properly, problems occur that result in longer recovery and escalating restoration costs. We set up and monitor the drying process through every phase to ensure that proper drying occurs. We will document moisture levels, provide moisture maps, and photograph drying for the insurance provider.

When the property has been thoroughly dried, we start the sanitation process. We must make sure everything is cleaned and sanitized because of the mold and other contaminants that form due to standing water.

Water damage is not something that you want to happen on your commercial property. But when it does, you want to hire the right company to clean up the damage and get your business back to normal as quickly as possible. Call us today to put a disaster response plan in place.

What to do if your car has flood damage

If your car was partially submerged in floodwater, follow this  checklist for assessing flood damage afterwards.

If floodwaters partially or fully submerge your car, it can mean extensive damage and costly repairs. Here's what to do after the waters recede.

Vehicle Flood Damage Checklist

  1. Survey potential damage. Note the depth of the floodwaters in relation to your car. Avoid starting a flooded car — this will cause more damage if there is water in the engine.
  2. Act quickly. Submersion of a vehicle in salt water — which is more damaging than fresh water — makes the chances of corrosion much higher. Start drying out your vehicle as quickly as possible. Contact a towing service to get it back to higher ground. Oil, transmission fluid and lube may need draining before a tow.
  3. File a claim. Your insurance company along with a qualified mechanic will uncover how extensive the problems caused by flood damage may be. Among other inspections, they will:
    • Check the oil dipstick. Look for water droplets, which likely indicate that there is water in your engine. If that's the case, the cylinders, which are supposed to compress air instead of water, will be broken.
    • Remove water-damaged cylinders and check for corroded spots.
    • Change the oil and transmission fluid. If the car is not totaled, you’ll want to do this again after the car is in good condition and you've been driving it for several hundred miles.
    • Check the interior. If floodwaters were more than a few feet deep, water probably made it to the inside of your car.
    • Remove all moisture. They might use a wet/dry vacuum to collect standing water in your vehicle, cloth towels to absorb water that has soaked into the seats and carpet, and fans and dehumidifiers to accelerate the drying process.
    • Check electrical components. The mechanic might need to replace electrical components.
    • Check the fuel tank and line. A siphon pump might be used to remove some fuel. in order to see if water is present. If water is found in the fuel (which would naturally separate from the fuel), they will empty the fuel tank completely.

Once the extent of your car, truck, or SUV's flood damage is determined, your insurance company will weigh the costs to repair the vehicle against the cost of replacing it. If your car is totaled (considered a total loss) by the insurance, be sure to review what that means with your insurance agent.

Dealing with Sewage backup and how SERVPRO can help.Antioch Ca

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

sewage loss sewage loss coming of from drain hole. Water damage, Fire damage, Mold Damage, Covid cleaning. Antioch, Ca EAst Bay area

7/16/2019

A sewage backup is one of the most troublesome and foul incidents that can occur in a home – it can cause extensive property damage and severe health effects and, on top of that, it is extremely difficult and unpleasant to deal with. Cleaning up sewer backup requires a lot of time and effort, as well as specialized disinfecting products and purification techniques. Raw sewage cleanup,  in particular, is especially laborious and risky as it not only causes a lot of hassle and inconveniences, but also presents a variety of health effects (sewage spills contain contaminants that can cause serious diseases) and sanitation issues. Professional help is your best option in such situations, but you can do a few things to limit the extent of the damage before the experts arrive (or even deal with the problem yourself if the damage is not too severe).

What to Do After Sewage Backup

There are certain important precautionary measures to take after a sewage backup in order to prevent the damage from spreading:

  • Keep children and pets away from the affected area;
  • Put on appropriate protective equipment – rubber gloves, rubber boots, impervious coveralls, protective eyewear, and a face mask;
  • Switch off the electrical power to your home (only if the distribution panel is safely above water). Wear rubber gloves and use a dry wooden stick to shut off the main switch;
  • Turn off any running water and don’t use the water supply system in your home (it may even be a good idea to turn off the water supply to the building);
  • Open doors and windows to allow fresh air inside (do not use the central air conditioning system to ventilate your home as sewage-contaminated dust and water droplets can enter the HVAC system and contaminate it);
  • Take any dry, un-contaminated items away from the affected area;
  • Add small amounts of chlorine bleach to standing water to ensure some disinfection;
  • Notify your insurance company that there has been a sewage spill in your home;
  • Contact your municipal authority or sewage department (if your home is connected to a public sewer) or your local health department (if your home is connected to a private septic system) and ask for advice;
  • Call a professional water damage restoration company. The quick and efficient intervention of the experienced technicians will save you a lot of time and effort and will provide the most appropriate, safest, and cost-effective solution to the problem. Besides, most sewage cleanup companies offer not only water extraction, but also quality repair works, odor removal, and content cleanup, so you will have all the aspects of the restoration process taken care of when using professional sewage cleanup services.

Good to remember:

  • Take pictures of the sewage spill and the water-damaged items and structural materials before removing them or having anything cleaned up (the photographs will serve as proof for your insurance claim). Keep all the receipts for materials and replacements, as well as for the repair and cleaning works performed in your home;
  • Do not use harsh chemicals to unclog the draining system as they can cause severe damage to the pipes and sewer lines. Opt for treatment methods that use enzymes instead of chemicals or call a plumber to fix the source of the problem;
  • Take appropriate measures to prevent cross-contamination (keep the doors between the contaminated area and the other rooms in your home closed, do not use the central air conditioning system until the problem has been solved, keep air pressure in the contaminated area lower than in the rest of the building, etc.) to ensure that sewage contaminated soil won’t be tracked into unaffected areas of your property and airborne sewage-contaminated dust (or mold spores) won’t be blown to other spaces.

Good to remember: The longer the contaminated waters remain in your home or on your items, the greater the chance of spreading disease and causing a mold problem. You need to take quick and efficient measures in order to prevent greater damage and more serious troubles. Using professional sewage cleanup services is your best bet as the experts will respond to your situation in the quickest, safest, and most appropriate manner possible. The pros will use specialized cleaning products, advanced equipment, and proven techniques to remove water from your home and restore it to a safe and good condition. Their quality services include:

  • Removing sewage water and solid waste in a safe and appropriate manner;
  • Removing contaminated content;
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the area;
  • Using professional grade air movers to ventilate and dry the area;
  • Performing any necessary repair and restoration works;
  • Restoring salvageable content to its original good condition;
  • Performing mold mitigation services (if necessary) and/or taking efficient measures to prevent mold growth.

Proper sewage cleaning will ensure your peace of mind and allow you to get your life back on track soon after the disaster.

Once the problem has been solved, however, make sure you take the necessary precautions to reduce the chance of sewage backup in the future.

How to Prevent Sewage Backup

  • Regularly inspect the pipes and valves on your property and keep them in good repair;
  • Do not allow large amounts of harsh chemicals into the sewer system;
  • Avoid disposing of grease down the kitchen drain as it can harden within the plumbing and collect debris to create a clog;
  • Don’t flush napkins, tissues, diapers, and other waste down the toilet;
  • Don’t plant trees or large shrubs directly above or near sewer lines as the roots can grow too large and break the pipes.

These simple measures will help you avoid sewage problems in the first place and will save you a lot of time, money, and nerves. However, if a disaster happens despite your best efforts, make sure you identify and fix the problem that caused the sewage backup and call reliable water damage restoration professionals like SERVPRO of Antioch 925-706-0106  to handle the sewage backup cleanup and ensure the excellent condition of your property.

Why is spring cleaning so important?

spring cleaning spring cleaning

Winter has finally faded away and spring colors are in bloom. While it might look restorative outside your home, the interior may still be dealing with a gloomy, cold weather hangover. A good spring cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home and enable you to enjoy all the benefits of California's seasonal change.

Here are a few reasons why spring cleaning is important:

Breathing – Seems like a simple issue considering it is a necessity of life. But when your home is closed off and insulated during the winter months, dust settles, air becomes stagnant, and your respiratory health suffers. A solid spring cleaning improves the air quality of your home and makes you feel better. With a clean house, your mood will improve, and you’ll be open to welcoming visitors.

Less Mess – Clutter wears you down. When you have stuff taking up space and gathering dust in your home without purpose, it can impact your emotional health as well as your physical well-being. We are not saying it’s time to purge, but a comprehensive spring cleaning can help lift the veil from the winter doldrums. You will find you can concentrate better and feel less stressed. As the saying goes, less is more.

Trouble Spots – When items in your house or apartment remain in the same place for long periods of time, pockets of dirt and dust build up – so much so that you often won’t even notice the pattern. A thorough spring cleaning digs out all the collected muck and helps you see your home in a new light. Maybe the layout of your family room suddenly seems inefficient and uncomfortable? A spring cleaning can open new possibilities for your home.

Preventing Damage during high wind storms

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

storm damage fallen tree branches from heavy wind storm

SERVPRO of Antioch wants to remind everyone in the Contra Costa county and surrounding areas of the possibility for high winds to be entering this area any time of year. With this wind, comes the possibility for damage which could jeopardize your safety and could leave to an insurmountable about of repairs and restoration. Our community has seen its fair share of weather-related damages and it never hurts to be prepared for even the worst conditions. Prevention is easy with the following three simple steps:

1) Keep outdoor items from becoming harmful weapons!

High winds may come with other hazards such as hail, heavy rain, and flooding. These hazards can make something as simple as a trashcan or a child’s toy to becoming a safety hazard! When you receive a warning for wind and storms, make sure to bring anything that could be a danger in these conditions inside to avoid damage. This will prevent broken windows, damaged siding, and decrease the chance for personal injury. Outdoor buildings, such as storage sheds, should also be anchored properly to avoid damage.

2) Reinforce susceptible areas.

Garage doors are particularly susceptible to wind damage. High winds can damage or create a high-pressure situation which can damage your roof as well. Reinforce the door by using braces across the back and tracks. Modifications to any door should be done by an installer to avoid damage.

3) Pay attention to your trees and landscaping.

In this area, trees are a particularly dangerous combination with high winds and heavy storms. Trees can cause debris that may damage your home in a windstorm. Taking care to make sure your landscaping is done properly and safely is one of the highest ways to avoid these types of damages. Be aware of weak, or dying, trees to have them removed or reinforced before a storm.

If winds damage does occur, remember to trust your local professionals. SERVPRO of Antioch will work hard for you to bring your home  back to the preloss condition the right way!

What to do after you have a water loss in your home

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

water damage in kitchen water damage in kitchen area, air movers placed to start drying process

No one ever wants to find water damage in their home, but reality is that most home owners will have to deal with it at some point. How the issue is handled is extremely important. Water damage can be caused by a broken pipe in the wall or toilet overflow or even a major storm.

Whatever the situation a fast response time  is always key to handling your water damage and minimizing the chance of mold growth. There are a few steps that should take place when water damage is discovered.

Determine source and stop

When water damage is caused by a broken pipe or supply line in the home, you should turn off the water to the home. You may be able to shut it off at the main if not you may have to contact a plumber for assistance. In some cases, like when dealing with storm intrusion there is no main to turn off and really no way to stop the water from affecting the home.

Perform Mitigation

In order to perform mitigation, which is the process of drying out the property the source of water should be off. Professional remediation services are available to help you dry out the property faster than a home owner could do on their own. The dry out process includes extraction of bulk water, removal of affected materials that can’t be dried and drying of remainder materials that can be dried.

Professional Assistance

Nobody wants to deal with water damage in their home, but when it does happen there are companies that can assist with the process and make the experience a little more bearable. SERVPRO of Antioch is the company to call to help you overcome the situation. We are a local company that offers immediate response to any size disaster. Call us at 925-706-0106

How to spot water damage in your home

10/20/2020 (Permalink)

water damage water damage to a crown molding in a home

You may think a water leak or a busted pipe would be easy to detect and definitely something you’d notice right away. The truth is, sometimes the signs of water damage are hidden – behind your walls, under your floor boards, or even on the exterior of your house. Whether the situation happened an hour ago or a month ago, there are a number of ways to remedy the problem with water damage repair and a reputable restoration company. First and foremost is finding the source.

What to Look For

Water damage can take on different colors, textures, and even smells, depending on the type of location of the damage. For instance, ceiling water damage is usually easier to spot than water damage in a basement because you will see stains and discoloration on a ceiling, but may not know that a musty odor can be a sign that there is a problem on the lower level of your home. Learn these telltale signs so that you can identify an existing problem and be prepared to spot it in the future.

Water Accumulation

The most obvious sign that you’ve got water damage on your hands (or that it will become a bigger problem) is areas of standing or pooling water. These can result from old or malfunctioning appliances including washers, water heaters and toilets. A puddle could also occur from a leaking roof, or from drainage pipes if the water is on the outside of your home.

Discoloration

With ceiling water damage, look for water spots and stains. The area may appear wet or dry and can be a yellow, brown or copper color. Walls may also have bubbling, cracking or peeling paint or wallpaper in addition to staining.

Changes in Texture

While flooring can also show discoloration like ceilings and walls do, the main sign of water damage in floors is detected by changes in texture. This is a result of water seeping into the floorboards and areas underneath them. Some common texture variations include:

  • Warping – caused by changes in humidity and temperature, resulting in gaps between floorboards or curling at the edges. (Ceilings may also become warped from water damage.)
  • Buckling/bp – Occurs in wood floors when one side of the wood becomes detached from the substrate and “tents,” or faces upward.
  • Sagging/Sinking – You may notice soft spots in hardwood floors due to rotten wood, which feels spongy compared to normal wood. Water can seep into subflooring of all types of flooring material and cause sagging.
  • Expansion – Wood and laminate floors will “expand” when they absorb too much water because the material swells and then separates.

Odor

Odors caused by mold and mildew could implicate a water damage problem. The smell may come from basements, walls, or other areas where water has been accumulating for a while. Certain drywall materials can act like a sponge and become full of moisture because there is low air circulation. This is the perfect conditions for mold to develop, which will eventually result in visual discoloration (usually black spots) and a detectable odor.

Common Places/Causes

Water damage can occur in any part of your home; however, there are some areas that are more high-risk than others. Make a checklist and inspect each area in your home to know where and what to look for when it comes to identifying water damage.

Ceilings

Ceiling water damage can come from a few sources. If the room is on the top story of a home, it could be from a leaky roof caused by rain or melting ice/snow in the winter months. If there is a bathroom above the ceiling with wall damage, it could be from a burst pipe or cracks in the floorboards.

Walls

One of the easiest ways to spot water damage is water stains on walls (and ceilings). Make sure to also check around door and window frames. An unusual stain could be a sign of a leaky pipe or drain inside the wall.

Flooring

There are many things that can cause water damage to floors – overflowing sinks/bathtubs, flooding from faulty appliances and bad pipes. Hiring a water damage restoration company is the best way to pinpoint the exact cause of flooring water damage.

Exterior/Foundations

The exterior of your home can also experience water damage. If there isn’t proper drainage in the yard or if the gutter spouts don’t carry runoff water far away from the house (or if the gutters leak), water can pool next to the house and if left untreated, cause even more damage to your home’s structure.

Attics/Roofs

Stains, mold and wet or swollen installation are signs of a leak in the attic. If your roof has cracked, curled, or missing shingles, damaged flashing or signs of wind/rain damage, it could be vulnerable to leaks, which could result in water damage. Weather in colder climates can cause ice dams to develop on the roof, which can leak into the attic when snow and ice melts. Pay attention to possible problem areas including around roof vents and chimneys, the flashing (where the roof connects with the walls) and the valleys (where two roof planes connect) to help prevent water damage.

Appliances

Check behind refrigerators, washers/dryers, hot water heaters and toilets/sinks for any sign of pooling or leaking water. An appliance or bathroom component (toilet/sink/shower) will most likely cause water damage because of a faulty piece of equipment that isn’t easily seen. For example, a cracked hose or loose connection means that these parts may fail soon and could cause leaking in your home – which could lead to water damage.

Holidays are peak fire danger season

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

fire fighters Contra Costa Fire Department helping in a fire situation

Local SERVPRO® restoration specialist cites statistics on escalated cooking and candle fire risk that can turn festivities into a fire drill

As the holiday season approaches and families gear up for decorating their homes and hosting large gatherings of friends and family, Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch reminds homeowners to take note of some sobering statistics about home fire safety from the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires. The three peak days for home cooking fires are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.
  • Candle fires peak in December. The top three days for candle fires are Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

“These statistics are a serious reminder of how the excitement of holiday entertaining can quickly turn into a life-altering fire or even a tragic injury or death,” says Borders. “While glowing candles and elaborate meals set the stage for a great holiday get-together, homeowners need to exercise extra care in controlling the dangerous potential for fires.”

According to the NFPA3, unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of home cooking fires, with frying posing the greatest fire risk and electric ranges posing a higher risk than gas ranges. Range top cooking in general started the majority of home cooking fires and caused 86 percent of related civilian deaths for the reporting period.

While incidents of candle fires peaked in 2001 and has been falling since, candles are still one of the top 10 causes of U.S. home fires, according to the NFPA. As with cooking fires, unattended or abandoned candles account for a large portion of candle fires–almost 20 percent–but the most frequent cause of candle fires is placing the candle too close to something that can burn, like curtains, decorations or furniture.

“It’s easy to see why cooking and candle fires both peak during the holiday season,” says Borders, “and it’s also easy to see why homeowners need to take extra care when decorating their homes or entertaining. A moment’s inattention at the stove or a guest re-positioning a candle on a tabletop may be all it takes to turn the festivities into a fight to save property and lives. While our business is fire and water damage restoration and we stand ready to help at a moment’s notice if disaster does strike, our sincere hope is that our friends and neighbors will enjoy a fire-free and festive holiday season.”

Please take all necessary precautions to help keep your family and home safe during these holiday seasons.

Installing an Attic Fan can save you money

Attic Fan Installing an Attic Fan can save you money

Another Life Lesson I learned recently. I know attics are HOT, we spend a lot of time in attics. I know they can reach 120 degrees or more. But I never really thought about how a hot attic affected my electricity bill and how much I use my air conditioner. Recently I have been trying to figure out why I was not benefiting from my solar system that was supposed to be a net zero on my electricity and now I am facing a true up of almost $2000. This journey took me through two main eye openers for me, which in reality should have been no brainers. One is the ash on the panels, separate story. But the other is the impact of keeping the attic cool and the amount that it can impact the electricity bill, and the amount of air conditioning that is needed to cool the house. They say that keeping the attic from reaching these really high temperatures can have an impact as much as 15% on your electricity and the amount of time you run your A/C. The idea is simple, install a fan that blows the super hot air out of the attic, the air that is evacuated is made up by the outside air being pulled in from outside. The outside air, while still possibly 100 degrees is still cooler than the 120 + temperature air. Wow what a simple concept. So I did it, I installed an attic fan. Cost me $139 from Home Depot and took less than 30 minutes to install. It is Bluetooth enabled so I can see the temperature in the attic and the speed of the fan, as well as adjust it and operate it without having to go inside the attic. The last several days I have been monitoring the attic temperature and it has consistently been within a degree of the outside air. Even when the temperatures reached 100 degrees outside. The house feels cooler and we aren't running the A/C as much. Who knew? Again, sounds basic, and common sense, but yet something we don't necessarily really think about.

Ash Covering your Solar Panels is costing you a lot of Extra PGE

10/18/2020 (Permalink)

Dirty Solar Ash covered solar panels don't produce electricity well, costing you more money

ASH had covered my Solar Panels and my True Up was going through the roof. Every month I watch my PG&E bill and particularly my True Up as I have solar on my house. Usually my PGE Bill is a few dollars or a negative amount but last month, it was $206. When I looked at my True Up it was over $400 a month for the last two months, it more than doubled over the past 3 months. The True Up is something that a lot of people don't watch. This is the amount of electricity you ACTUALLY use each month. In theory, you use less in the winter and more in the summer. This gets averaged out and at the end of your True Up year, you have a negative amount or an amount owed. I usually trend to have a True Up of about $1000 on top of my Solar cost and Monthly PGE cost. But, this past month I saw that my True UP was almost $1900 year to date. More than DOUBLED my average. I started looking into why my costs were going up so fast, and yes it is hotter and our air conditioning is running more, BUT I found out that the ASH from the wildfires has not only coated everything in my world, but had covered my solar panels and was reducing the amount they were producing. I was virtually paying for solar yet not producing any power and using PGE for my electricity. I contacted my Solar company and they said to get the production back up I needed to simply rinse them with water to get the ash off. They stated the panels are designed to clean simply with water. They said DO NOT scrub them, use soap and water, or pressure wash, just simply rinse them off. This made a huge impact and my production is back up to where it should be. As I look around my neighborhood I see most of the panels are white, and covered with ash. Are yours this way and are you being impacted by this ? Are you losing the advantage of your solar panels? Hopefully you will see this and learn what I learned. Hopefully this will help to stop the bleeding as we are paying for solar and we are paying more for PGE that we are losing in our production. Have you looked at your PGE bill and your NEM charges? Did you know you can call your Solar company and ask for a production report to see how much you may be losing? The fix is simple and necessary, simply rinse your panels to clean them. The rain will fix this also, but in the meanwhile we are paying for it in increased PGE costs. Hope this post finds you well and feel free to share your experiences.

What is a foundation and why should I care ?

9/24/2020 (Permalink)

20409 70th St Homes are the single biggest investment the average person will ever make

What is a Foundation?

The foundation is the component of construction that supports the entire home.  There are two basic types of foundations, "Concrete" and "Raised".

A Concrete foundation is a concrete slab that is poured on top of a bed of prepared soil and rock.  The house is then built upon this concrete slab.  A concrete slab does not have a crawl space.

A Raised foundation is the oldest and most common foundation which consists of an outer wall made of wood, masonry or concrete with a series of pillars inside of the perimeter which support the home.  The home is then built on top of these pillars and perimeter wall.  This foundation has a crawl space.

Often times when we buy a pair of shoes, we look at the style of the shoe and the looks of the shoe.  We don't always turn it over and inspect the sole of the shoe and seldomly do we buy the shoe based on the quality of the sole alone.  The "sole" is much like the "Foundation" of a home.  The foundation supports the home and has everything to do with how the home will stand up over the long term.

When buying a home, the foundation is  always inspected as a part of the buying process, but we don't always give it the attention that we should, because we are looking a the looks of the home, the style and the fit of the home.

Redfin has recognized this and has created some information on what a new home buyer should be looking for when it comes to the foundation.  This information was compiled by several experts in the field, including SERVPRO of Antioch.

tips for pets during a storm scared puppy during a storm. Pet Safety, Antioch Ca, East bay area. Water damage, fire damage, mold damage, Covid cleaning.

SERVPRO of Antioch understands that when a family owns a pet, they become a part of your family. During the winter months East contra Costa area is no stranger to storms. Often these storms bring in several problems including one of the largest being safety compromising. SERVPRO has developed a couple of tips for you and your family to make sure your pets stay safe during both storm situations and everyday emergencies.

1) Start Getting Ready NOW

-Make sure that all cats and dogs are wearing collars and identification tags that are up to date. This will increase your chances of being reunited with your pet if separated.

-Put together your disaster kit for yourself and your pets. This includes food, water, and necessities.

-Find a safe place to stay ahead of time. Never assume it will be allowed to bring your pet to an emergency shelter. So, before a disaster hits, make sure that you are given the authorization by your local office of emergency management to make sure it is alright to evacuate with your pets.

-Contact hotels outside of your immediate area and find out if they accept pets. Ask about restrictions to pets including number allowed, size, and species.

2)If You Evacuate, Take Your Pet

-If it isn't safe for you, chances are, it isn't safe for your pet either. You have no way of knowing how long you will be kept out of your home after the evacuation and you may not be able-or allowed- to go back for your pets.

3)After The Disaster

-Make sure to assess the damage and hazards before letting your pets roam through your home. There may be wild animals who may have sought refuge in or near your home during a storm or emergency.

4) Be Ready For Everyday Emergencies

-Find a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member and give them a spare key to your home to care for your pets if you are not able.

-Make sure the caretaker understands the specific needs of your pets.

If you follow these steps your pet will be safe during whatever emergencies come your way.

And trust SERVPRO of Antioch  for all of your storm damage needs. We make the damage "Like it never even happened."

Storm damage to a roof Tree feel on a roof during a storm

Contra Costa  County Storm Damage

The beautiful Northern California seasons are often tempered by powerful storms, with heavy rains, strong winds and destructive hail. Through it all, your home protects you from the elements, so be sure to check it for damage afterward.

Even if you have no reason to suspect that damage occurred, check your home and its surroundings (once it’s safe to do so). It’s important to identify problems, make emergency repairs and determine if an insurance claim is necessary.

Here is a list of Storm Problems areas:

Roof

Your roof might be the area of your home most vulnerable to damage in a storm, because so many things can impact it. Whether you’ve had high winds and downed tree branches or just a simple hailstorm, look for these indicators of damage:

  • Holes in the roof
  • Missing Shingles
  • Leaks in your roof or ceiling
  • Split seams

Building Exteriors

While siding, stucco and brick all are durable, they also are susceptible to storm damage. In some instances, homeowners don’t notice until it’s too late to file a claim, so check carefully for:

  • Cracking, chipping or dings and dents on siding. Even if there doesn’t appear to be damage at first, check again at a different time of day. You may see something you missed when the lighting is different.
  • Holes in stucco. This is a serious problem, even when small, so look closely. If you find holes, have a professional conduct a full property inspection.
  • Damaged brick and tuck pointing. While brick typically holds up well, a check can identify any problem areas.
  • Detached or damaged trim, gutters, etc.

Storm and flood damage require specialized restoration techniques and equipment. When a storm hits your home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise. SERVPRO of Antioch can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

September Is National Preparedness Month

Local SERVPRO disaster mitigation specialist says the COVID-19 pandemic is a tough reminder that “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.”

Antioch, CA (Grassroots Newswire) September 2, 2020 - Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month to promote the importance of family and community disaster planning. This year’s theme, “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today,” resonates strongly as local communities and communities around the world battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For disaster mitigation specialists like Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch, the scope and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all aspects of everyday life, health, and well-being have magnified the importance of SERVPRO’s ongoing message to the communities it serves: When disaster strikes, preparedness is the best defense.

“Before COVID-19 exploded into a global crisis, ‘disaster preparedness’ for the everyday home or business owner was largely dictated by the hazards unique to their location or their business,” said Borders. “For some, that meant preparing for hurricanes and water damage; for others, tornadoes, flooding, wind damage, or even wildfires. But COVID-19 taught us that everyone – individuals and business owners alike – needs to be prepared for a national emergency that may disrupt food and medical supplies, transportation systems, schools, businesses, and every single aspect of everyday life that we take for granted. We’ve learned that, no matter where you live or work, in addition to your ‘disaster’ preparations, making certain that you have a stock of some basic items on hand can make a huge difference if a national or global event suddenly disrupts – or even stops – everyday life.”

Borders emphasizes that everyone still needs to have a disaster preparedness plan in place. FEMA provides easy-to-use disaster planning guidelines at https://www.ready.gov, and home and business owners both can take advantage of free tools like the SERVPRO READY app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app stores essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of Antioch as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app.

But, Borders says, COVID-19 has taught us we need to rethink and add to our disaster-preparedness toolkits. “We are all still struggling with a ‘disaster’ that has disrupted not only our lives and our jobs, but our entire community, our society, and the supply chain that we depend on.” While in retrospect, the shortages of some of these items have become the stuff of urban legend, Borders says it’s a good idea to stockpile a supply of items for which there are no easy substitutes. “Toilet paper; yeast and flour for breadmaking; detergents; canned foods, fruits, and vegetables; pet foods and cat litter; fresh dairy items; diapers; and a host of other items were in short supply for weeks at the beginning of the crisis,” said Borders. “Think back on those weeks and keep a supply of the things that you just don’t want to do without – along with some shelf-stable dairy items, dried beans, and frozen meals. Use them before they expire but be sure to replace them.”

The disaster remediation specialists at SERVPRO of Antioch extend their sincere sympathy to those who have lost loved ones or have been otherwise affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For Antioch-area commercial and residential customers, SERVPRO of Antioch continues to specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened.” For more information on SERVPRO of Antioch, please contact Michael Borders at (925) 706-0106 or Mike@SERVPROofantioch.com. Benefits of Hiring a water damage restoration company

Benefits of Hiring A Water Damage Restoration Company

Water damage may be the most common form of property damage, but nobody likes to deal with it. Whether it comes from a leaking pipe, a heavy rainstorm, or appliance fail, water causes a great deal of damage to both building materials and furnishings, and it will continue to wreak havoc until it’s removed. This is one job it’s better to leave to a water damage restoration company for a variety of reasons.

Finding Hidden Water Damage & the Leak Source

Sometimes it’s easy to find the source of excess water in your home; if failed water heater is spraying water all over , that’s the most likely culprit. Other times the source is tougher to find; a broken pipe in a wall or a crack in the foundation can easily be overlooked. If the source of the leak isn’t corrected, there will be a never-ending cycle of flooding and cleanup until it’s fixed. Water can get into places most people wouldn’t think to look and cause damage that can go undetected until it’s too late. Trained professionals from restoration companies know how and where to look for water damage, as well as for sources of leaks. They know what to look for and where because they do it so often, unlike the average homeowner.

Heavy Duty Equipment & Products

Water damage mitigation professionals use the most advanced equipment and products in the industry. This equipment is usually not available to members of the general public, often because using them requires specialized training. Carpet vacuum cleaners aren’t designed to remove water, and commercially available shop vacs may not be able to handle an extensive flood. A restoration company has its own heavy-duty dehumidifiers, air movers, fans, and vacuums and doesn’t need to worry about borrowing or renting enough of them, especially in the case of a disaster when others may be trying to rent them. Their water extraction equipment can remove large amounts of standing water and dehumidifiers and air movers can even extract water from damaged materials. All done by trained professionals so no secondary damage will be done

Fast Responses & Time Savings

When you find signs of water damage in your home or business, it’s important to act quickly before even more damage occurs. Wasting time tracking down resources and manpower gives rot and mold more time to ruin furnishings and building materials. That’s why it’s best to call a water damage restoration company that offers 24 hour, 7 day a week emergency services. Leaving cleanup to the professionals frees you and/or your staff to continue running your life or your business.

Reducing Costs & Insurance Help

Working with a water damage mitigation company may save you money in the long run. A reputable company will do a comprehensive restoration the first time, ensuring that water won’t remain and soak into your property. Having to hire a company to come back and clean up mold and restore rotted building materials will be much more expensive. It will cost you even more if you have to take time off work to do any cleanup work yourself. A restoration company will also help you file a claim with your insurance provider for any property that was damaged by the flood or by mold. Since these companies frequently work with insurance adjusters, they know exactly what paperwork is necessary and the best ways to file claims.

Any time you find excess water in your home or business call the water damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Antioch 925-706-0106

No matter if it comes from rain, sewage backups, or broken pipes, we’ll respond quickly to begin the mitigation process before the damage can spread further or harmful mold or bacteria can begin to grow. Our certified and experienced professionals remove excess water; dry, dehumidify, and disinfect the area; restore structural elements and personal items; and remove all traces of mold from your property.

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retain top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process uses “objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation” to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are “financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system.”

“It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers,” said Michael Borders, owner of SERVPRO of Antioch. “The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer.”

According to Borders, several differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

  • SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.
  • SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.
  • SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, “One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees.”

“Today,” Steen continues, “as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support.”

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies “Like it never even happened.” For more information about SERVPRO of Antioch, contact our office 24/7 at 925-706-0106

Steps to take after having a house fire

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

house fire fire damage to house on hillside

A house fire can be very scary and traumatizing to most people. A mixture of emotions wondering what to do next and how to get it done. First thing to do is to take a deep breath and know that there are services to help tackle the recovery process of your home and belongings. We have put together a list of some simple steps to do and be aware of after a fire.

  1. Review with authorities such as police and fire departments as to when it’s safe to enter the home after the fire. The fire should be completely extinguished, and precautionary measures taken to make sure the structure is deemed “safe” to enter.
  2. Know who to contact. First call your homeowners insurance carrier and advise them of the situation. A claim number will be provided to you along with contact information to a claim representative to assist you. Next contact  a cleanup company such as SERVPRO of Antioch. We can efficiently and professionally assist you with the process from the cleaning to the reconstruction.
  3. Make sure your property is secure. On most occasions the fire department will contract with a company to board up any broken windows or unlockable doors. When a property is not secure its possible it could be robbed for remaining property or another individual becoming injured on the property.
  4. Begin the cleanup process. Interior and exterior damage will most likely occur and need to be addressed. You should always hire a professional company like SERVPRO of Antioch to do a thorough cleaning of the structure and personal property of all soot, smoke, and odor.                                   We can be reached at 925-706-0106

With these few steps facing a house fire might be a little more manageable.

common causes of a commercial firee

COMMON CAUSES OF COMMERCIAL FIRES

If you own a business or manage a building, fire protection should be among your primary concerns. There are many instances of commercial fires, so it is always best to be prepared with proper fire safety precautions. One of your best defenses against commercial fires is to understand and mitigate your risks.

Most Common Causes of Commercial Fires

Commercial fires are more common than you may think. It is always better to be prepared by knowing the common causes of most of these commercial fires. By knowing what may cause a commercial fire, your business can take proper precautions to prevent damage to your property.

Cooking Equipment

When you think of buildings with cooking equipment, restaurants probably come to mind first. However, any business that serves food is likely to have a kitchen area. Because of high cooking temperatures, flammable oils and grease, and the hectic nature of commercial kitchens, this is the single most common cause of commercial fires.

Cooking equipment is responsible for:

  • 65% of fires in healthcare facilities
  • 61% of fires in restaurants
  • 38% of fires in educational institutions
  • 29% of fires in office properties
  • 13% of fires in stores and mercantile properties

Heating Equipment

Depending on the climate, commercial buildings require heat to stay comfortable for several months of the year. As with other mechanical equipment, furnaces, boilers, and radiators are at risk of overheating. This, in turn, can lead to a fire.

Heating equipment is responsible for:

  • 14% of fires in industrial or manufacturing properties
  • 11% of fires in office properties
  • 9% of fires in restaurants
  • 5% of fires in healthcare facilities

Electrical & Lighting Equipment

All modern buildings feature electrical wiring behind the wall for light and power. Unfortunately, electricity carries inherent fire risk. Old or defective wiring, overloaded circuits, loose connections, faulty fuses, imbalanced electrical loads, and many other electrical or lighting problems can develop that lead to overheating or sparks that ignite a fire.

Electrical problems are responsible for:

  • 12% of fires in office properties
  • 10% of fires in stores and mercantile properties
  • 9% of fires in restaurants
  • 5% of fires in healthcare facilities

Smoking Materials

Lighted cigars, cigarettes, and other smoking materials can start fires if disposed of improperly. Fortunately, the rate of fires caused by smoking materials has decreased in recent years because of declining popularity and the introduction of “fire safe” cigarettes with reduced ignition strength. Still, smoking materials remain one of the top five most common causes of commercial fires.

Smoking materials are responsible for:

  • 9% of fires in office properties
  • 7% of fires in restaurants
  • 5% of fires in healthcare facilities

Intentional

An intentional fire is one that occurs as the result of the deliberate misuse of a heat source. Arson fits into this category, though to be considered arson, the fire starter must have malicious, criminal intent.

Intentional fire-starting is responsible for:

  • 36% of fires in educational institutions
  • 10% of fires in office properties
  • 6% of fires in healthcare facilities
  • 4% of fires in restaurants

What should I be disinfecting in my home in the Bay Area

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Spray Cleaning The effective use and application of disinfectant can help to slow the spread of bacteria and viruses within your home

In this time of Coronavirus and the need to keep ourselves as safe as possible and in addition to washing our hands, we need to be aware of the surfaces we are touching and understand that these surfaces can harbor bacteria and virus, especially when touched by a person that is Covid positive.

We should be maintaining touch point surfaces daily, this means cleaning with an approved Disinfectant all the areas that we touch or others touch.  It is also important that the disinfectant stay on the surface for the recommended “dwell” time to make sure that that the bacteria or virus we are attacking dies.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum.  These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDCs guidance for commercial spaces as well.

Cleaning removes the soil and dirt that harbors the infectious agents, while disinfecting kills the remaining environmental pathogens.  Cleaning is a necessary first step in disinfecting a surface.  Both cleaning and disinfecting must be a part of your scope of work and plan.

Surfaces you should consider for Routine cleaning and/or disinfecting would include but are not limited to:

Tables and Chairs, Countertops, Cabinets and Pulls, Doorknobs, hard Surface Floors, mats, Food Contact Surfaces, Light Switches, Paper Towel Dispensers, Push Doors, Salt and pepper Shakers, Sink hardware, Soap Dispensers, Tabletops, Bath and Shower, Toilet Flush Handle, Handrails, Computer Equipment, Telephones, Racking, Fitness equipment and any other surface that can be touched by you or others to operate.

For more assistance in cleaning and sanitizing SERVPRO of Antioch is your local expert in Professional cleaning and Sanitizing for your home or business.  We work on properties to establish both pre-emptive cleaning and cleaning for confirmed Covid cases.  Call us at 925-706-0106

How long does it take for mold to grow in the bay area

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Overflowing sink Whether it is an overflowing sink, washing machine or other appliance, always make sure the area is handled correctly to avoid mold growth

So you’ve had a little overflow at the house and you think you did a good job soaking up the water and cleaning up the spill.  A few days have gone by and now it is starting to smell musty and you are wondering what is happening.

It doesn’t take much water to make a pretty big issue.  That smell you are experiencing is the sign that things are happening on the microbiology scale.  Even though you may not see anything, mold is starting.  This can happen in as little as 72 hours after the water damage, or quicker if the water was hot.

Mold only needs a few things in order for it to grow, humidity, Food (Wood like your framing or paper like your drywall) and warmth.  Mold likes to have environments similar to what is comfortable with us when it relates to warmth.  Our houses are mostly made of wood and paper materials, just what mold likes to eat.  So, now you add a little moisture and you have the ideal environment for mold to grow.

What do you do now?  Well, if you truly had a small amount of water that you cleaned up quickly, you may be able to get away with cleaning the areas touched by water with a disinfectant and setting up a fan to dry them out.  This is only an option if the area was very small and there are no visible signs of mold growth.

If the area is a little larger, has visible signs of mold, or has multiple layers of materials then you may have to get more invasive.  The only way to get rid of mold is to physically remove it.  Spraying and wiping it may make the visible part go away but all you really did was put all the mold spores in the air that you breathe.  The affected materials, drywall, baseboard, flooring needs to be physically removed to at least 12” beyond all visible signs of mold damage.  This is the only way to remove mold.  If you have more than a small area of mold (less than a square foot)  you really need to bring a professional in to help assess your needs to properly take care of the issue.

BE AWARE, mold remediation is often an area that be taken advantage of by the restoration contractor.  Often times, the restoration contractor will use fear as a means of increasing the cost of the job.  They may also bid a really small number, far less than anyone else, and then when they open the wall, tell you that they found a much larger problem and the overall cost ends up higher than any other company you received an estimate from.  Always find a restoration contractor that you are comfortable with and you feel is being truthful with you. Avoid the really low estimates, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.  Never let a remediation contractor also perform the testing, this is a direct conflict of interest and gives him the ability to make the job whatever he wants it to be.  Always use an independent Hygienist that works for you, science never lies.

Mold Remediation should average about $185 per man hour of labor plus any equipment to control the environment and any testing that may be needed.  If you receive and estimate of $5000 for a job that will take about half a day, you know that estimate is high.  As well, a $1000 estimate for a job that will take three to five days may be too low and indicate an expensive “find” during the work.

At SERVPRO of Antioch we pride ourselves on giving honest information and honest bids.  We never inflate our estimates and the price we give you is what we strive to keep it at.   When we assess your situation, we walk you through what we see and what it means as well as what it will take to remediate.  You will be knowledgeable of your loss at the end of our assessment so you can make the decisions that are right for you.  We always use independent Hygienists that work for you, so you are assured that our work is done correctly.

Mold is a household issue that must be disclosed at the time of sale in California.  It is important that you have a professional company remediate when it is more than a tiny amount, and that you have the paperwork showing that your indoor environment has been returned to its pre loss condition.

Should you need help with your musty smell, call the experts at SERVPRO of Antioch at 925-706-0106

Interruptions to business happen and when they do it often is extremely disruptive, frustrating and can cause a loss of income from down time and business interruptions.  When this business interruption results from a water loss, fire loss, mold or other emergency situation, the interruption can be catastrophic.

The key to getting a business back to operation is immediate response, proper and efficient mitigation.  Minimal Demolition saves on the reconstruction needs and further disruption after we leave the site.  Minimal demolition requires immediate response.  The longer that materials are allowed to stay in water or with smoke the more damage that occurs to these materials and the increased need for demolition.  Calling and getting help immediately is crucial.

Being a Leader in the Commercial Restoration industry requires a lot more than simply drying a building.  It revolves around putting in place the right strategy for getting the business back up and running as quickly as possible.  The longer a business is offline due to an emergency the more customers they stand to lose to competitors.  These customers are almost impossible to get back once you lose them, time is of the essence when an event takes place.

During these uncertain times getting your business back up and running is our #1 priority.

What should you do after a storm event?

How to handle things after a  Storm Hits

Fall is right around the corner believe it or not.  Fall and winter  often bring some severe wet weather and flash flooding mixed in with the cold. Winter storms can sometimes prove the most severe. Its very seldom that we get through the season without at least ONE major rainstorm. After the storm its important to know what to do as well as what not to do. We’ve put together some useful tips that can be used in the event of a storm.

Photograph the Damage.

You can never take too many pictures. Your insurance company will appreciate it and make the claim go much easier if you have good photos.

Contact your Insurance Carrier.

As soon as you have gathered all preliminary information, you should contact your homeowner’s provider. If your vehicle should sustain damage, then you would also contact your auto carrier as well.

Safety First.

Be aware of fallen power lines and be careful not to come in contact with electrically charged water.

Inspect Plumbing.

Turn of your water at the main if necessary and contact a trusted plumber should plumbing be compromised.

Inspect your Roof.

Heavy rains and winds may have dislodged some of your roofing. If roofing damage is discovered call a roofing contractor for repair or even temporary tarping to avoid further damage.

Contact SERVPRO of Antioch.

If the storm has resulted in flooding or even minor water damage call SERVPRO of Antioch immediately to start the water remediation process. Secondary damage can occur within 48 hours. Always work with trustworthy service providers, unfortunately there are some companies that attempt to take advantage of storm events. Always obtain a written contract that outlines services provided and associated costs.

Feel Secure knowing SERVPRO is here to help.

what to do if you have smoke damage in your home

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

soot damage to a living room ceiling Call the experts when it comes to fire smoke damage in your home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Antioch will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Homeowner choosing a professional mitigation company Choose SERVPRO of Antioch

Just imagine, you come home from vacation to find your home flooded by water throughout your home. The first thing you think is who can help in this type of situation? Most people think that they should call a contractor since they build houses, but there’s a difference between a general contractor and a restoration contractor. As a professional water restoration company, we try to restore, rather than replace. Most contractors job is to replace everything that is affected, such as flooring, drywall, cabinets and even furniture. SERVPRO of Antioch technicians are certified and qualified in drying and cleaning water damage to IICRC industry standards. The average dry time is 3-5 days and only remove materials that can’t be dried by our protocol. Restoring your home is more cost efficient than replacing materials in your home. We work with all home insurance carriers and are here to help 24/7 for your emergency losses. Call us at 925-706-0106

We are an IICRC certified firm

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Antioch is an IICRC firm.

 What does that mean?

Why does that matter when choosing your mitigation/ cleaning  company?

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

  • Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
  • Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
  • Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
  • Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

We here at SERVPRO of Antioch we take pride in knowing that we are  all trained and certified to industry standards. And we maintain those qualifications, to help better serve you and your home.

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month Offers Home and Business Owners an Opportunity to Resolve to be Ready for an Emergency

Local SERVPRO disaster restoration specialist highlights no-cost tools to help property owners prepare and maintain a comprehensive emergency readiness plan

Antioch, CA (Grassroots Newswire) August 27, 2019 - No matter where you live or work, emergencies caused by weather, fire, wind, water, and other natural or manmade disasters can strike at any time and are largely unpredictable. SERVPRO of Antioch reminds Antioch-area home and business owners that preparing in advance is the best thing you can do to help minimize a disaster’s impact on your loved ones and your property. Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month – a time to create, or update, your plan for when disaster strikes.

“In the same way that people make ‘resolutions’ at the New Year, National Preparedness Month is a great time to resolve to create a plan, or review your existing plan, each and every year,” said Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch. “Everyone needs a comprehensive emergency plan. Business owners also need to plan for business interruption and continuation. But equally importantly, families and businesses alike need immediate access to data like emergency and insurance contacts, shut-off valves, electrical panel locations, and the line of command to authorize work so emergency responders can react quickly and appropriately during the emergency. This month’s focus on preparedness is a great incentive for both families and businesses to put a plan in place and review it regularly.”

Creating an emergency plan is straightforward, according to Borders. No matter what type of threats exist where you live or work – wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other natural or manmade disasters – tools are available from FEMA (https://www.ready.gov) with guidelines for preparing emergency food, water, and medical supplies; planning for special needs; and creating communication and evacuation plans. These tools and others, like the SERVPRO READY app, also help you store essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Both home and business owners can download the free app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp

“The key to getting your life or business back on track is timely response after a disaster strikes. That’s why it’s important to take the time to record and store your information electronically, and then commit to a time – like National Preparedness Month – to review and update your records at least once each year,” said Borders. “Remember, filing cabinets and their contents may be inaccessible or even destroyed in an emergency situation, so don’t depend on them to keep track of critical insurance, property, or contact information in the event of a disaster. Store your data electronically. If disaster strikes, you’ll have the information you need literally at your fingertips.”

SERVPRO of Antioch specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. For more information on SERVPRO of Antioch, please contact Michael Borders at (925) 706-0106 or Mike.borders@SERVPROofantioch.com.

Fire safety plan, a great holiday gift

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Looking for a Great Holiday Gift Idea? Give Your Family a Fire Safety Plan

The holidays are approaching and many families are finalizing plans for elaborate meals, get-together with friends, and decorating with festive lights. Amidst all this planning, Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch reminds homeowners that they may be overlooking the most important plan they can make—a fire safety plan.

“Each year, statistics1 show the incidence of home cooking and candle fires peaks during the holiday season. This tends to focus homeowners on fire prevention precautions—and that’s a good thing,” said Borders. “But to truly protect your family from the dangers of a home fire, at the holidays and throughout the year, you need to start with a fire safety plan. Developing a fire safety plan and practicing it regularly with your family is the most important step you can take to help prevent a house fire from turning into a devastating tragedy.”

SERVPRO is a national leader and provider of fire and water cleanup and restoration services, and their disaster response professionals know from experience how devastating a home fire can be. They also know that when fire causes a loss of life, there is no “remediation” possible. This is why SERVPRO has teamed up with the American Red Cross (ARC) by supporting the ARC Disaster Responder program, and in particular the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign3. As a Disaster Responder, SERVPRO pledges dollars and support in advance to help the ARC develop and distribute educational materials and respond immediately when they are needed.

Borders encourages all Antioch-area homeowners to follow these fire safety guidelines, developed by the ARC through their Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, to help minimize injury or loss of life due to a residential fire.

  1. Install the right number of smoke alarms4. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  2. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like5 and what to do when they hear one.
  3. Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.
  4. Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.
  5. Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire” to alert everyone they must get out.
  6. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
  7. Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

“Fire prevention and fire safety planning are two very different things,” said Borders. “Fire prevention planning helps control or eliminate the causes of a fire. Fire safety planning helps prevent injury and loss of life when a fire does break out. To protect your family and your property, you need both.”

Borders of SERVPRO of Antioch recently joined a record-breaking group of more than 2,500 franchise owners, key team members, and corporate representatives at the 50th Annual SERVPRO® Convention. “Celebrating our 50th anniversary milestone made the SERVPRO Annual Convention even more special this year,” said Michael A. Franchisees and their key staff gained knowledge and hands-on experience to help them build and grow their businesses and strengthen ties with both residents and businesses in their local communities. Highlights of the convention included a keynote address by motivational speaker Jon Gordon and an awards ceremony recognizing the achievements of top-performing franchisees.

“SERVPRO has come a long way since Ted and Doris Isaacson started the company as a painting business in Sacramento in 1967,” said Rick Isaacson, chief executive officer of SERVPRO. “In 1969, they used their cleanup and restoration background to take their new company in a different direction and never looked back. SERVPRO’s professional services network now includes more than 1,700 individually owned and operated franchises across the U.S. and Canada. Our annual convention brings this diverse group of entrepreneurs together to learn from industry experts and each other about the latest innovations in disaster cleanup, restoration, and remediation services. When this company had a fear that an employee had a possible  Clostridium Difficile scare, also known as C diff. It's potentially detrimental to a business.

C. diff spores can be shed to the environment by both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients and may survive for up to 5 months on inanimate surfaces.

Getting it taken care of as quickly as possible is of the utmost importance.

September is National Preparedness Month: “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how”

Local SERVPRO disaster recovery specialist offers Antioch property owners tips for preparing for, surviving, and recovering from the unexpected

Antioch, CA (Grassroots Newswire) August 28, 2018 - Local disaster restoration specialist Michael Borders, owner of SERVPRO® of Antioch, reminds Antioch property owners that September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september)

For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike:

Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.

Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.

Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.

Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.

“There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster,” says Borders. “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.”

Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, Borders reminds Antioch-area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of Antioch as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app.

“SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small,” said Borders. “From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, prequalified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of Antioch, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened’ for both commercial and residential customers.”

Mold Damage

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Damage is Found

At SERVPRO of Antioch we receive many calls regarding mold being found in homes. Its always recommended to hire an IEP (Indoor Environmental Professional) or a Hygienist to perform an air quality test to determine which species of microbial growth we are dealing with. When mold is found it is never an emergency, it can take up to 72 hours before the beginning stages of mold are discovered.

When mold is discovered it can be a very scary experience, but don’t be scared because we are here to help. Mold can be difficult to detect at times and by the time its found significant damages may have already resulted in the home. Mold is usually a result of a water intrusion that wasn’t mitigated properly. When your indoor relative humidity reaches 60% or higher that’s an ideal environment for growing mold. Just remember when mold damage is found in your home there’s a few things you should avoid from doing; cleaning off by spraying or wiping and placing any kind of fan directly on the affected area. Instead refrain from disturbing and give us a call at 925-706-0106 so we can help.

Biohazard Cleanup Importance

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

The proper handling of blood and other bodily fluids during crime scene cleanup is essential to protect the health of the cleaners on the job

During a violent crime, injuries and even death can leave health hazards behind. Blood stains and other bodily fluids can transmit disease if they are not addressed properly, and inexperienced cleaners can face risks if the proper cleanup techniques are not used. If your property has been the site of a violent crime, hiring SERVPRO of Antioch to handle hazardous cleanup is a smart and cost-effective choice.

Cleanup Crew Safety

The proper handling of blood and other bodily fluids during crime scene cleanup is essential to protect the health of the cleaners on the job. Our professional crime scene cleaners have both the experience and the resources to address any hazards that may remain at a crime scene without risking exposure to disease, either to the cleanup crew or to anyone who might access the area during or after crime scene cleanup. Not only will SERVPRO of Antioch use the right techniques to prevent health hazards, they will also bring with them any and all equipment necessary, rather than requiring you to research and purchase the tools and solutions needed to clean blood stains and other signs of a violent crime.

Occupant Safety and Convenience

If crime scene cleanup is not completed properly, the crime site can remain a serious health hazard long after the initial event. Many blood- and fluid-borne diseases remain active threats for significant periods of time, while other issues such as pests or mold could put building occupants at further risk if the crime scene is not properly cleaned. Antioch is our city, it is a reflection of us and should be a concern for each and every one of us everyday

Within recent months, we have seen a spike in the number of shootings, robberies, burglaries, Graffiti, illegal dumping, homelessness and many other things that have brought negative attention to our city and have lowered the appeal of out city.  how do we take back our city? How do we create a safe city where we can walk at all times of the day and night without fear of being mugged? How can we clean up our city?  Please share your thoughts of what areas of our city need attention, and how we can address things concerns. Lets work together and see if we can help make Antioch beautiful and safe again.

We are just in the process of bringing in a new mayor, Sean Wright, who has  a lot of vision for the city of Antioch.  What are the top priorities for Sean to tackle?

Lets work together to make Antioch a more competitive city and a safer place to be.

Do you think you have mold ?

• Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride in

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Biohazard Cleanup importance

Biohazard Cleanup importance

SERVPRO of Antioch will not only ensure the site is cleaned quickly and with minimal disruption to your daily schedule, but also prevent the many problems that can arise when crime scene cleanup is not handled properly and thoroughly. Crime scene cleanup is a job that is always best left to professional cleaners for health, safety, and peace of mind. Working with SERVPRO of Antioch will protect you and your property from the potential long-term effects of violent crime.

When it comes to Mold, What you Can't See Can Hurt You

12/8/2016 (Permalink)

A room of a house that doesn't get used can be a place for mold to develop when left unchecked

When you find you have mold, the saying "Out of sight , out of mind" does not hold true.  You can clean the visible mold from the surface using a variety of cleaners, even water.  However, what your doing is making only what you see go away.  Mold spores are .3 microns in size, they are microscopic.  By the time you see mold, you are looking at colonies of molds.  When you try to clean mold, what you are doing is putting everything into the air.  The mold spores that you are putting into the air are what we have allergies to.

"What you cant see can hurt you" when you are talking about mold spores.  Not all mold is harmful, it depends on the species, the levels in the air, and your personal immune system.  But, whenever you have any kind of mold growing in your house, one thing is for sure.  It shouldn't be there!!!

When you have mold, the only way to get rid of it is to physically remove it.  In these pictures, this home developed extensive mold in a room that wasn't regularly checked.  You can see in this picture the steps we are taking to remove it.  Notice the wall on the right, this is the bathroom wall also covered in mold.

Periodically check all your spaces in your home, especially where water lines run to look for leaks or mold.  Whenever you find something, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Antioch.  925-706-0106.  Inspections for Water Damage and Visible Indicators of Mold are Always FREE during Business Hours.
