Water Damage A Dirty Clean up ; Sewage Sewage can happen in any size and any quantity completely taking out everything in its path

At SERVPRO of Antioch our technicians specialize in all kinds of dirty jobs, in particular; sewage clean up. They are trained to know and understand the USA-EPA, OSHA and IICRC guidelines and standards when it comes to sewage clean ups. First and foremost, our concern is always safety. IICRC which stands for the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification is an International association leading training and education for the restoration industry. Sewage is classified as a category 3 black water loss in their S500 standards. Category 3 water losses are grossly contaminated by either sewage or mold which can contain pathogenic, toxigenic and or harmful agents. When it comes to sewage contamination the water has the potential for causing major illnesses when not addressed correctly. When it comes to sewage clean up all affected areas should be pre-treated with an EPA registered disinfectant to help minimize cross contamination. All bulk water should be extracted, and all porous and semi porous materials should be removed and disposed of. For instance, when dealing with sewage or unsanitary water that affects a Bathroom with tile flooring and a Hallway with carpet flooring on a slab foundation. The scope should entail all bulk water being extracted, wet carpet and padding will be removed and disposed of. Vanity will be detached and inspected for contamination. All drywall and insulation in the affected area will be cut out and disposed of at a minimum of 24” high. The remaining materials which is structural wood framing and concrete slab foundation will need to be heavily sanitized and dried by placement of dehumidification before the structure can be reconstructed. During the clean up process we also place air quality machines called Air Scrubbers which filtrates the bacteria in the air by using HEPA filtration down to .3 microns in size.

SERVPRO of Antioch takes pride in helping others with their restoration projects, particularly when it comes to restoring indoor environments by making them safe and like new again. Should you ever come into an unsanitary situation be sure to have the clean up performed by a skilled and certified company such as SERVPRO of Antioch. Biohazard Cleanup Importance

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

Biohazard Biohazard Cleanup Importance The proper handling of blood and other bodily fluids during crime scene cleanup is essential to protect the health of the cleaners on the job

During a violent crime, injuries and even death can leave health hazards behind. Blood stains and other bodily fluids can transmit disease if they are not addressed properly, and inexperienced cleaners can face risks if the proper cleanup techniques are not used. If your property has been the site of a violent crime, hiring SERVPRO of Antioch to handle hazardous cleanup is a smart and cost-effective choice.

Cleanup Crew Safety

The proper handling of blood and other bodily fluids during crime scene cleanup is essential to protect the health of the cleaners on the job. Our professional crime scene cleaners have both the experience and the resources to address any hazards that may remain at a crime scene without risking exposure to disease, either to the cleanup crew or to anyone who might access the area during or after crime scene cleanup. Not only will SERVPRO of Antioch use the right techniques to prevent health hazards, they will also bring with them any and all equipment necessary, rather than requiring you to research and purchase the tools and solutions needed to clean blood stains and other signs of a violent crime.

Occupant Safety and Convenience

If crime scene cleanup is not completed properly, the crime site can remain a serious health hazard long after the initial event. Many blood- and fluid-borne diseases remain active threats for significant periods of time, while other issues such as pests or mold could put building occupants at further risk if the crime scene is not properly cleaned. SERVPRO of Antioch will not only ensure the site is cleaned quickly and with minimal disruption to your daily schedule, but also prevent the many problems that can arise when crime scene cleanup is not handled properly and thoroughly. Crime scene cleanup is a job that is always best left to professional cleaners for health, safety, and peace of mind. Working with SERVPRO of Antioch will protect you and your property from the potential long-term effects of violent crime.

What to do in case of fire in your home

Fire Damage What to do in case of fire in your home Be safe when something bad happens inside your home, being prepared is key

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Antioch will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Do you think you have mold ?

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Do you think you have mold ? • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride in

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Fire Consumes Everythings with its Destructive Force

12/8/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire Consumes Everythings with its Destructive Force This photo shows the effect cleaning can have in the removal of soot from walls and ceilings. This still requires painting, but the soot is gone.

Fire, is an awful beast, consuming everything in its wake and covering what it didn't destroy in thick black smoke.  If you experience a Fire, its important to remember that Life is the most important thing, the items that we lose can be replaced.

A Fire can become out of control in as little as 60 seconds.  If you smell smoke, get out of the house and call for help.  don't try and put it out yourself or you could get really hurt.  The gases that come from the combustion and the heat that can be generated is often times enough to kill you before the flames ever can.

When there's a fire, the smoke that remains is a mixture of everything that combusted in the house which could be papers, plastics, chemicals, etc.  This thick black smoke locks itself to every surface.  When walls get affected, they most often need to be painted.  But paint wont stick to smoke so then the smoke has to be removed.  The removal process for smoke is specialized and extremely labor intensive.  If the wrong product is used then the paint wont stick to the surface, yet again.

This is a photo of the before and after in a fire that ravaged a house leaving black smoke everywhere.  Its amazing how much of the smoke can be removed when done correctly.  It still needs to be painted, but the paint WILL stick to these walls.

When you experience a Fire, make sure that the work is done right.  Call SERVPRO of Antioch at 925-706-0106

Mold? But I didn't see anything, how did that happen ?

12/8/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold? But I didn't see anything, how did that happen ? A Drain line coming from the upstairs developed a leak, behind the cabinets where the homeowner cant see it. The cabinets hide the real damage

Mold is one of those things, Its all around us looking for a nice place to settle down and grow.  Our houses are warm and made from wood and paper, all the things that mold spores are seeking.  Introduce some water and we have the third element which now leads to growth.

Kitchens are notorious for leaks and things that happen involving water.  The cabinets keep these things hidden.  When was the last time you moved all those bags and cleaners and other stuff that lies under your Kitchen sink to look for leaks and / or mold growth ?  We don't, and by the time we find it, its too late.

This is a case of a leak in the drain coming from the upstairs behind the dishwasher.  Never was this noticed until water became visible, which by then, was too late.  When we removed the Kitchen Cabinets, you can see how the mold spread to the left and right sides behind the cabinets.  None of this was able to be seen otherwise.  Scary Stuff.

When you have worries or concerns, call SERVPRO of Antioch.  We will come and inspect for water damage or visible mold concerns, information is always FREE during normal business hours.  925-706-0106

When it comes to Mold, What you Can't See Can Hurt You

12/8/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation When it comes to Mold, What you Can't See Can Hurt You A room of a house that doesn't get used can be a place for mold to develop when left unchecked

When you find you have mold, the saying "Out of sight , out of mind" does not hold true.  You can clean the visible mold from the surface using a variety of cleaners, even water.  However, what your doing is making only what you see go away.  Mold spores are .3 microns in size, they are microscopic.  By the time you see mold, you are looking at colonies of molds.  When you try to clean mold, what you are doing is putting everything into the air.  The mold spores that you are putting into the air are what we have allergies to.

"What you cant see can hurt you" when you are talking about mold spores.  Not all mold is harmful, it depends on the species, the levels in the air, and your personal immune system.  But, whenever you have any kind of mold growing in your house, one thing is for sure.  It shouldn't be there!!!

When you have mold, the only way to get rid of it is to physically remove it.  In these pictures, this home developed extensive mold in a room that wasn't regularly checked.  You can see in this picture the steps we are taking to remove it.  Notice the wall on the right, this is the bathroom wall also covered in mold.

Periodically check all your spaces in your home, especially where water lines run to look for leaks or mold.  Whenever you find something, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Antioch.  925-706-0106.  Inspections for Water Damage and Visible Indicators of Mold are Always FREE during Business Hours.

Home Fire Damage Peaks During Holiday Season

Home Fire Danger Peaks During Holiday Season

Local SERVPRO® restoration specialist cites statistics on escalated cooking and candle fire risk that can turn festivities into a fire drill

As the holiday season approaches and families gear up for decorating their homes and hosting large gatherings of friends and family, Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch reminds homeowners to take note of some sobering statistics about home fire safety from the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires. The three peak days for home cooking fires are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.1
  • Candles fires peak in December. The top three days for candles fires are Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.2

“These statistics are a serious reminder of how the excitement of holiday entertaining can quickly turn into a life-altering fire or even a tragic injury or death,” says Borders. “While glowing candles and elaborate meals set the stage for a great holiday get-together, homeowners need to exercise extra care in controlling the dangerous potential for fires.”

According to the NFPA3, unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of home cooking fires, with frying posing the greatest fire risk and electric ranges posing a higher risk than gas ranges. Range top cooking in general started the majority of home cooking fires and caused 86 percent of related civilian deaths for the reporting period.

While incidents of candle fires peaked in 2001 and have been falling since, candles are still one of the top 10 causes of U.S. home fires, according to the NFPA. As with cooking fires, unattended or abandoned candles account for a large portion of candle fires–almost 20 percent–but the most frequent cause of candle fires is placing the candle too close to something that can burn, like curtains, decorations or furniture.

“It’s easy to see why cooking and candle fires both peak during the holiday season,” says Borders, “and it’s also easy to see why homeowners need to take extra care when decorating their homes or entertaining. A moment’s inattention at the stove or a guest repositioning a candle on a tabletop may be all it takes to turn the festivities into a fight to save property and lives. While our business is fire and water damage restoration and we stand ready to help at a moment’s notice if disaster does strike, our sincere hope is that our friends and neighbors will enjoy a fire-free and festive holiday season.”

SERVPRO make the Top 10 List Again

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process uses “objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation” to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are “financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system.”

“It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers,” said Michael Borders, owner of SERVPRO of Antioch. “The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer.”

According to Borders, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

  • SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.
  • SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.
  • SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, “One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees.”

“Today,” Steen continues, “as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support.”

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies “Like it never even happened.” For more information about SERVPRO® of Antioch, contact Michael Borders at (925) 706-0106 or Mike@SERVPROofantioch.com. Advance Planning for Disaster Recovery

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Advance Planning for Disaster Recovery You are never ready for a loss that can put you out of your home of business, Disaster Planning is critical to expediting a loss when one occurs

 Advance Planning for Disaster Recovery

SERVPRO offers Antioch property owners no-cost tools for preparing a disaster readiness plan

Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors an awareness eventNational Preparedness Month (http://www.ready.gov/September)to encourage both home and business owners to review and update their emergency preparedness and business and life continuity plans. Michael Borders, owner of SERVPRO® of Antioch, encourages Antioch property owners to take advantage of the information available from FEMA, because advance planning is critical in dealing with and recovering from the unexpected.

“Most home and business owners have taken basic precautions to protect life and property in the event of an emergency like flooding, fire, wind damage, or even malicious attacks,” said Borders. “In many cases, building codes require clearly marked emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire and flood drills, and similar preparations. But the missing link for many property owners is a comprehensive emergency plan that provides first responders with the information they need to deal with the emergency quickly and effectively, like the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, and emergency contact numbers.”

SERVPRO offers tools for both commercial and residential property owners to help address this problem. Business and home owners alike can download the free SERVPRO READY app, and store time-critical contact and property information electronically, in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. In addition, when a business designates their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.

“The most effective response to any emergency is a fast response,” says Borders, “and that means having critical information available and ready to access at a moment’s notice. FEMA statistics* show that as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen after a major flood disaster. Minimizing downtime and repairs with a quick, effective response effort can help prevent this type of outcome for businesses and can also help families put their homes and lives back on track in less time and with less stress. Creating a READY profile in advance with SERVPRO’s no-cost tools is well worth the time.”

SERVPRO® of Antioch specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Fire Safety Plan, a Great Holiday Gift

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire Safety Plan, a Great Holiday Gift Picture of a Living Room after a fire ripped through the home that was started by items plugged in to the wall in the Living Room

Looking for a Great Holiday Gift Idea? Give Your Family a Fire Safety Plan

The holidays are approaching and many families are finalizing plans for elaborate meals, get-togethers with friends, and decorating with festive lights. Amidst all this planning, Michael Borders of SERVPRO® of Antioch reminds homeowners that they may be overlooking the most important plan they can make—a fire safety plan.

“Each year, statistics1 show the incidence of home cooking and candle fires peaks during the holiday season. This tends to focus homeowners on fire prevention precautions—and that’s a good thing,” said Borders. “But to truly protect your family from the dangers of a home fire, at the holidays and throughout the year, you need to start with a fire safety plan. Developing a fire safety plan and practicing it regularly with your family is the most important step you can take to help prevent a house fire from turning into a devastating tragedy.”

SERVPRO is a national leader and provider of fire and water cleanup and restoration services, and their disaster response professionals know from experience how devastating a home fire can be. They also know that when fire causes a loss of life, there is no “remediation” possible. This is why SERVPRO has teamed up with the American Red Cross (ARC) by supporting the ARC Disaster Responder2 program, and in particular the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign3. As a Disaster Responder, SERVPRO pledges dollars and support in advance to help the ARC develop and distribute educational materials and respond immediately when they are needed.

Borders encourages all Antioch-area homeowners to follow these fire safety guidelines, developed by the ARC through their Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, to help minimize injury or loss of life due to a residential fire.

  1. Install the right number of smoke alarms4. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  2. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like5 and what to do when they hear one.
  3. Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape6 from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.
  4. Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.
  5. Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire” to alert everyone they must get out.
  6. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
  7. Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

“Fire prevention and fire safety planning are two very different things,” said Borders. “Fire prevention planning helps control or eliminate the causes of a fire. Fire safety planning helps prevent injury and loss of life when a fire does break out. To protect your family and your property, you need both.”

Biohazard Cleanup Importance

8/22/2016 (Permalink)

Do you think you have Mold ?

6/16/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Do you think you have Mold ? Mold will occur in your home when you have a water intrusion that is allowed to continue for more than 3 days.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

What to do in case of a Fire at your home

Fire Damage What to do in case of a Fire at your home House fire involving the attic and spreading through the upstairs of the home. Heavy smoke is forming on the walls of the home.
